Mental Health and Wellbeing Awareness

It seems that everywhere you turn these days there is a celebrity, sport star or politician who wants to open about their mental health.

It’s fantastic that high profile people are talking about it, but would you know if someone close to you was struggling with their mental health?

Do you know what to look for? Would you know what to do and how to help?

All this talk about mental health, but what is it? Is it true that you are either born with with or you’re not? Is it really a chemical imbalance in the brain?

You want to do the right thing, but you’re not a counsellor. What if you say something to make it worse? What if you ask if they’re ok and they say ‘No’?

What do you do? Surely this sort of thing is best left to the professionals? So many questions…

Course unit breakdown

Ten questions in a game show format designed to test your knowledge of mental health and wellbeing. It's not a test, more of an indicator of how much you may already know.

A session exploring some of the myths around mental health. In this interactive module we find out what people really think, and challenge some misconceptions in a ‘true or false’ activity, like: ‘You need special training to talk to someone’ and ‘If dad had depression, I will get it too”

People may not know what to say, for fear of causing offence or being hung out to dry by the ‘PC’ brigade. In this short interactive module, we clear up some of the jargon. What is “Mental Health”, “Wellbeing” and “Resilience” anyway?

For some, mental ill health is very black and white; ‘you are either sick, or you are not sick’. In this engaging module we explore why it’s not as simple as that by introducing the Continuum, another way of thinking about mental health.

What affects our mental health? Why do some people develop mental illness and other don’t? In this interactive module we explore issues such as Stress, Genetics (nature vs nurture) and chemical imbalance among others.

This module is divided into the most common workplace conditions. You will gain a better understanding of Stress, Anxiety and Depression. We look at how to spot the signs someone might be struggling, and what treatment could help.

What do I say or do? What if I ask about them and then don’t know how to handle what they tell me? What if I make it worse? In this module we are going to look at what you can do to support someone. We are going to look specifically at suicidal crisis and non-emergency situations.

What should we be doing to build our own personal resilience and protective factors against poor mental health? By the end of this module learners will have their own tailored action plan for enhancing their own wellbeing, based on the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’

In this short module we invite learners to share their current thoughts, having completed the course. We then compare those thoughts with those gathered at the beginning to see how far we have come. A reflective module.

A final knowledge check to measure and consolidate learning. This quiz can be set to have a pass mark, requiring the learner to retake the test if a required mark is not achieved.
